Safety should be first and for most before any concrete cutting, core drilling or demolition begins on any project. One must consider all safety aspects of a job before one begins the project. I will try to list a few of the most common, however, there may be many more because each job configuration can be much different. This is for informational purposes and we recommend you hire a licensed Concrete Cutting, Coring, Demolition Professional should your project need such a service.
Concrete Cutting & Core Drilling:
First, before any building penetrations are made I like to walk the job area and surrounding locations where work is to be performed. I look for existing utilities that may come into play. You need to work carefully around any of these utilities or re-rout the work away from the existing utilities. When cutting wall or floor penetrations look to see there is nothing on the back side or the wall or nothing underneath the floor that could pose a problem. Were protective clothing, such as : eye protection, long pants, heavy duty rubber boots, gloves, dust mask, hard hat, florecent vest.
Trip Hazards:
The Americans with Disabilities act is the Federal agency that determines what a trip hazards are. The agency was formed in 1990. The ADA states that a vertical lift of 1/4 inch or higher is deemed a trip hazard and should be removed. The ADA states that these lifted vertical areas must be removed and walkways must have a smooth path of travel. Owners of such properties must remove these trip hazards and not doing so could pose legal liabilities should someone trip on one of these trip hazards.
Solutions for trip hazards
One of the most common ways to remove a trip hazard is grinding. Grinding process is a diamond wheel turning a high RPM turns a concrete into dust thus removing the lifted high spot. The area is tapered back until a smooth transition is made and the lifted area is removed.
Grinding can be a great alternative to removing and replacing the concrete.
Benefits of grinding over conventional remove and replace:
•Less Expensive
•Faster
•less disruptive to your business
•reduces your exposure to liabilities
•Can be done on off hours
•ADA compliant
